Frugal World Traveler Part 2!

Welcome back to Stitching with Swampy.  In Part 1 of this tutorial series, we sewed the trip around the world block.  Now we are ready to the sew the bordered economy block to alternate with our trip around the world blocks. Leftover from the previous tutorial you should have the following:

  • Low volume fabric A – 4 strips 3″ x 8″
  • Low volume fabric B – 1 square 3″ x 3″
  • Low volume fabric C – 2 squares 4″ x 4″
  • Black or dark fabric – 2 squares 3″ x 3″, and 2 squares 5″ x 5″
  • Accent fabric – 1 square 3″ x 3″, and 1 square 4.25″ x 4.25″

Let’s get to it!

Step 1

1. Cut the two 4″ x 4″ squares of fabric C in half along the diagonal.

Steps 2 and 3

2. Fold each triangle in half and gently finger press on the long edge to mark the centre.

3. Repeat with the accent fabric 4.25″ square to mark the centre of each side.

Step 4

4. Sew triangle the side of the square matching centre creases and being careful not to stretch the triangle.  Press seam towards triangle.  Repeat on all sides.

Step 5

5. Trim resulting square down to 5.75″ square, maintaining the points of the centre square at the centre of the block. If you’ve sewn accurately, this will leave a 1/4″ seam allowance at each point of the centre square.

Step 6

6. Cut the two 5″ squares of black fabric in half along the diagonal.

Steps 7 and 8

7. Fold each triangle in half and gently finger press on the long edge to mark the centres.

8. Sew triangle the side of the square matching centres.  Press seam towards triangle.  Repeat on all sides.

Step 9

9. Trim resulting square down to 8″ square, maintaining the points of the centre square at the centre of the block. If you’ve sewn accurately, this will leave a 1/4″ seam allowance at each point of the centre square.

Step 10

10. Sew a fabric A strip to opposite sides of the resulting square.  Press seams towards strips.

Step 11

11. Join the fabric B 3″ square, one fabric A strip and one black fabric 3″ square in that order.  Press seams towards strip.

Step 12

12. Join the remaining black fabric 3″ square, fabric A strip and accent fabric in that order.  Press seams towards strip.

Step 13

13. Sew strips to centre section with the fabric B square and accent fabric squares caddy corner from each other (see photo). Press seams open.
