It’s time to introduce you to my latest pattern, Mercury Burst. This pattern is a larger paper piecing block that finishes at 24 inches square.
This block has a lot of potential both as a single block or as a repeat. Thanks to the large size, make one block with a border for a lovely wall hanging, or make just four blocks for a decent-size lap quilt. Depending on what parts of the design you emphasise, a number of lattice effects can be achieved.
Also, if you choose to only make the corner segments, these can be combined to create a simple four-pointed star. It’s like two blocks in one pattern!
The shapes in this block provide lots of opportunities and space for free motion or straight line quilting. Use intricate quilting to bring out certain aspects of the block, or use simple quilting to let the complexities of the piecing shine.
Pattern tester Kim made her block in more traditional colours with pops of orange for interest. And look at that fussy cut centre! The scale of Mercury Burst is great for using some coveted large scale prints, as well as stripes and other directionals.
