More about this in 2012.
I haven’t decided what to do about “Bonus Features” yet, but in the past two weeks I was able to start and finish a new quilt, which I am calling “Morality.” It’s somewhat smaller than my other quilts, which may be why I was able to finish it so quickly.
I started by piecing a large houndstooth background, which would’ve been a lot less confusing if rabbits didn’t move all the pieces every time I turned my back….

Then I added an applique of a turkey in a houndstooth suit! The quilting is free-motion stippling on the turkey’s face, and then a kind of organic wavy line/dogwood pattern for everywhere else.

For the back I pieced together 4 large strips of coordinating fabrics, and the binding is this mustard and black floral that I seem to like using for everything recently….

I haven’t gotten around to washing off the guides I drew for the quilting yet, but other than that, this one’s a wrap!
I can’t believe it’s already almost December! I have only a few things to mention here today. First up is the top secret quilt. I am making some definite progress on this. I have only five 6″ blocks and eight 12″ block to piece. My top secret collaborator has seven 6″ blocks and two 12″ blocks. Combined, this probably only about a third of the main quilt image that is unfinished. During this past week, I completed the 49 HSTs for the border, so that is one less thing to do. I have also started thinking about the back. I’m hoping the perfect novelty print will show up at just the right time…
I also want to mention a couple of events this Friday, December 2nd!
Backspace Collective is having their first annual DrawBack fundraising exhibition. More info on that here, they are still accepting work until Wednesday! Backspace is located at 606 W. Main (behind 600 W. Main) in Peoria, Illinois, and the reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. This is a great opportunity to pick up some great art, and priced at just $25, you can’t go wrong.
Also, LemonDrop is having their 2nd Post-It Show and Art Sale. Post-its at this show are for sale for only $1! The show starts at 6:30pm, but the post-its are not available for sale until 7:15, so be sure to get there early if you want to see all the art. LemonDrop is located at 416 W. Commercial St. in Springfield, Missouri. I won’t be able to make it to this one, but it’s sure to be a great show with 17 artists participating (including me!).

I can’t believe it has been almost a month since I have updated here! I did not feel like I had a whole lot to show for it, but when outlining what to write in this post, I discovered I do have quite a few things to mention…

On the quilting front, I pieced the back and purchased batting for the flattened roast quilt, which is tentatively titled “Bonus Features.” I still have a bit more to do on the top before I’m ready to put it all together, but there is definitely some progress being made here. Also, I’m quilting the t-shirt quilt! I’m hand quilting in a pattern I am calling “willy nilly.” It is rather sparse as quilting goes, especially compared to White Turkey No. 3, but it will still be a bit before I finish and get to binding. Also, I am using up the scraps to make a rug for Yuri and Chalupa. Chalupa is intent on destroying every other rug we have, so it makes sense that he should have his own…

Lastly, Alyssa over at Midwest Action wrote a very nice post about me and my work. Meanwhile, Midwest Action is raising startup money on IndieGoGo in order to fulfill its mission to unite artists of all kinds by sponsoring networking events. If you are interested in contributing, be sure to do so before the fundraiser ends on November 1st.
Even though there is no official WIP Wednesday link-up this week at Freshly Pieced, I’m going to go ahead and do my first ever post for it, mostly because it’s rare for me to have a work in progress that I feel like sharing on a Wednesday of all days, but this week I do! Let me explain …
I have a lot of art in my apartment. I also have a lot of art in a storage unit (which is really kind of scary for me, pretty much any natural disaster could wipe it out !) My main dilemma with a good portion of this work is volume. So in an effort to reduce volume, my most recent project is to make something like this:

… into something less huge and not stuffed with 200+ plastic bags. The obvious solution is to make it into a quilt. Nice and flat!

How convenient. It’s not really as wrinkly as it appears… I’m using a few somewhat difficult fabrics, a pink mesh/tulle type fabric, some sort of semi-stretchy polyester shirting, ivory velour, satin brocade… All very conducive to easily being pieced together … not! I’m currently attaching the roast to the background, then I will be adding more buttons and yarn and such before doing some sort of quilting on it. I’m not sure what or how yet. It may need a few buttonholes also. That’s really all I have to say about this. Here’s a close up:

Don’t worry, I am recycling the 200+ plastic bags.
